hello.
First, this.
Then everything else.
The outcome isn’t the problem. Getting to it is.
You’re good at this. Probably better than most people in the room know. But something isn’t moving. A decision that keeps getting deferred. A role that expanded faster than the space to think inside it. A version of yourself that’s performing well and running quiet underneath.
That gap — between what you know and what you’re doing with it — is where this work happens.
Not a framework. Not a programme. Just the right question, at the right moment, with someone who’s paid attention long enough to know the difference.
Story
Royal College of Art. Co-founded a design partnership in London. Twenty years of creative direction — global clients, real work, a life that looked exactly right from the outside.
At the RCA they don’t teach you what to think. They teach you how to sit with a problem until it tells you something. That turned out to be the most useful thing I ever learned. It just took another twenty years to understand why.
Somewhere in the middle of all that — in a pub in Soho — I met the Italian woman who became my wife. I moved countries. Had two kids who correct my grammar in two languages. Started cycling. Stopped drinking. Got quietly well.
The ten years in between were less clean. Good work, real uncertainty. I kept moving — Milan, China, Europe — but I was performing the role rather than inhabiting it. Busy enough not to have to listen. Certain enough not to have to look.
The shift came slowly. I stepped back from being the role and started observing it. Removed the noise. Listened. Made clearer decisions in six months than I had in the previous six years.
That’s the sequence. It’s not complicated. But it has to happen in the right order.
I retrained as a coach not because I found the answer — but because I finally stopped avoiding the question.
What the long way around taught me
01—
First, stop performing. The noise is usually self-generated.
02—
Step back from the role. Observe it. That’s where the decisions live.
03—
Then move. Clarity isn’t a reward. It’s what happens when the first two are done.
